Any time he said "experiment" or "library" he would get distracted and offer the party a mint or berry, respectively, and had gone so long without needing to practice magic that he didn't even remember how to cast spells. When they finally met this all powerful wizard, who had been responsible for many of the campaign's more dangerous settings? They found a senile old man who had voluntarily locked himself into seclusion, left for thousands of years by himself. The party was fighting their way through an ancient wizard's home, braving deadly traps and guardians with the goal of reaching his library to unlock the secrets of the main BBEG. I basically ripped off Dr Mobius/the Think Tank from fallout new vegas. They were equal parts amused and terrified, and I had a blast playing an undeniably evil but friendly monster!Īnother more recent example was a senile wizard I played. According to the players, something about his chipper attitude while casually using his eye rays for mundane tasks like opening doors broke their resolve in a way that fighting through a dungeon of mind flayers hadn't. ![]() He told them it was kind of rude to come in without knocking and offered to give them a tour of the lair while talking about how his main goal was to foster a healthy work environment. When they met the beholder, they found a smiling eye meatball who spoke in a mild mannered new Zealand accent. They battled their way past a horde of mind flayers, wizards, and thugs on their way to slay the beast. The party had spent several weeks hearing about the evil Xanathar running a crime syndicate from the sewers. One example is the kiwi beholder I ran a few months ago. My players also find them to be the most memorable and it provides an easy way to bounce off the villain in engaging ways! I don't do this for every villain, but the ones that do adopt a more welcoming stance have been very memorable. This may not work for particularly serious campaigns, but I have a lot of fun hamming it up as super nice but super evil villains. Combat areas for every conceivable encounter.
